There is so much information on the internet. As a digital marketer, I write content daily for websites, blogs and social media campaigns and apply special techniques to my content to enhance its reach and ranking on Google. But how do you get your content noticed? How can improving your content improve rankings and help your business?

The answers all lie within the term ‘search engine optimisation’ (SEO). I have researched your most asked questions about SEO and have answered them with my best advice.

So, let’s get to it!

1.       What is SEO?

This is the most Googled question on the topic. Apart from what SEO stands for, it is important to know how it works. It is the method used to maximise your search engine rankings. The higher Google ranks your web page as a search result, the more visitors will click on your page.

2.       Why is SEO important?

The best way to answer this question is by using statistics:

300% more traffic is from search engines, compared with social media

93% online experiences start on a search engine

75% of users only look at the first page of results

81% of buyers search for a product online before purchasing

87% smart phone owners use search engines daily

70-80% of users click on organic results over paid ads

3.        How does SEO work?

Google processes approximately 4.4 billion2 searches a day and these searches produce billions of search results. With all this information, Google uses a learning technology called RankBrain to order and remove spam results. RankBrain measures readers satisfaction and prioritises user experience.

And it is much less complicated than it sounds. RankBrain cares about two things in particular:

·         dwell time – the amount of time the reader spends on your page

·         click through rate (CTR) – the percentage of people who click on your page

If you search “how to make your own ice cream?” and the 6th result has the clearest answer and you are satisfied with the answer – you click on it (CTR), spend some time reading it (dwell time) – RankBrain will recognise that this is a good answer, with quality content and will move it closer to the top results. But if the top result isn’t that popular it will move further down.

4.       How do I choose the best keywords for SEO?

Keyword research is the key to successful SEO. Our advice, when writing content for either a website or a blog, is to research the topic first and to make a list of keywords.

However, don’t just stuff your page with popular keywords as RankBrain may assume it’s spam -incorporate them into your content to increase dwell time and CTR. High quality content gets noticed!

5.       Can I use SEO on my own?

‘Do it yourself’ marketing is becoming much less popular. For anyone that is new to the world of digital marketing, including content creating and SEO, a specialised agency can assist your firm with keyword optimisation, social media, market research and content creating necessary for successful marketing.
